Drying Bins

Have we ever talked about drying bins? I don’t think we have! Drive across the countryside & you’ll hear the low hum of grain bin dryers. The whirring sound they make is very meditative, iconic & definitive of this time of year. And they play such an essential role on & off the farm, during harvest season!

Although there are different types of drying systems, they all work in a fairly similar way. Hot, dry air enters the dryer, recirculates & exits the bin. As the air moves through the grain, moisture, then, evaporates. There are basically 4 different types of drying bins, and these include batch bin dryers, high temperature bin dryers, roof dryers & recirculating batch dryers. The % moisture of the grain, from the field, will determine what type of bin is needed. Bins may contain stirators, which stir the grain, ensuring all grain is the same moisture, or they may not. Bins take a lot of care & maintenance. And as always, safety should be at the top of the list, when working in or around grain bins!

We are lucky to have a wealth of knowledge super-locally to us, with GSI group, now AGCO, in our backyard! You can check out their website at https://www.grainsystems.com/en_US.html to learn more! Or for those of you living in town, you can see the workings of bins, right outside your door, at the elevator! Whatever the case, grain bins are super essential & play a major role in harvest & are for more than just storage!
