Pre-Harvest Projects!

It has been a minute since our last farm update! Most recently, we enjoyed some time, together as a family, out West. We were fortunate to be able to see & do so much, during our time away. And there is nothing that quite compares to the beauty of the mountains, IMO!

Since we’ve been back home though, it has been full-steam ahead! We celebrated our youngest’s birthday, helped host our church’s annual fun day and both of the kiddos have started back to school! Around the farm, we’ve been working to knock out a couple of projects before harvest season is upon us!

Our first project has been to pour concrete in one of our back lots, for livestock use. This enables us to better care for the animals & allows for easier manure clean-up. Here are a couple of pictures of the process. We’ve been fortunate this summer, with some milder weather. And we definitely lucked out to have the trucks scheduled for some of those cooler mornings!

Our second project has been rebuilding the top of the grain leg, with the help of Bins 247. This area houses the distributor, which selects which spout the grain goes down. We also replaced the cover, since it was starting to rust. The spouts (or legs) were inspected and a new motor was put in. Pretty good for an early ‘70’s model though!

A grain leg is also known as a bucket elevator. It has buckets, which fasten to a belt and carry grain vertically, ultimately dumping into a downspout. The grain then slides down the downspout into a holding area, which may be a bin, dryer or truck. The advantage of a grain leg over an auger is that it is stationary and can fill multiple areas, without moving anything.

This afternoon, David has also been busy welding feeding gates, (think hay feeder) for part of the concrete project for our cow herd. We hope to get all this wrapped up soon, as the choppers are coming next week to do earlage! Shucks will start rolling in next week as well! Then on to harvest & calving season!
