Probiotics in Soil

Probiotics in gut health have really come to light within recent years. We are now connecting their importance to so many issues within the human body. They can help ward off disease & help treat existing disease. We also need probiotics to help accomplish the exact, same thing in soil.

Probiotic-rich soil will help ward off disease in crops & they will also help organic matter to break down faster in fields. How do you get more probiotics in soil? Hint…Compost. We have areas, on the farm, specific to composting. Manure (which contains nitrogen & water) + a carbon source is needed to compost. Add oxygen, to help oxidize the carbon & bam, you’re composting. Bacteria will process the carbon & nitrogen & excrete nutrients, such as potassium, phosphorus, magnesium & nitrogen. Fungi & protozoa help break down materials that bacteria cannot.

Compost is then added to the soil as a tilth improver. New term alert. Tilth is the “physical condition of soil, especially in relation to its suitability for planting or growing a crop”. It does this by supplying humus, which is the dark organic matter in soil, that is formed by the decomposition of plant & animal matter. What you have now is a great recipe for adding probiotics or “gut health” to your soil & improving your fields, yields & sustainability! I love science.
