Red Snow

I was chatting about harvest with one of my patients the other day. And she said this is the season of the “red snow”. I immediately knew what she was referring to. Anyone who lives near a grain elevator is also very familiar with this phenomenon, this time of year. It is from corn chaff, which is the husk surrounding the seed. This is the byproduct separated from the seed, when threshing grain.

Since it is so lightweight, it is easily carried on the breeze. And can be found accumulating into chaff piles in the street or on vehicles. Anyone who takes meals to the field knows not to leave vehicle windows down, otherwise they’ll be full of chaff & dust, being stirred up during the harvesting process. Check out our local main street, as we were heading to the post office the other day. Definitely the season of the “red snow”!
